Get to Know the Materials We Engrave and Cut

Thanks to advanced technology, we are now able to engrave and cut a wide range of materials using laser machines. This gives us a wider scope of creative possibilities and allows us to provide our customers with a diverse selection of personalised products.

Catering to various industries from manufacturing, electrical, trucking and transport, mining,  automotive, and carpentry, laser cutting and engraving emerged as game changers in the production and manufacturing sector.

Wood

Wood is one of the most popular materials used in laser cutting and engraving. Its versatility makes it ideal for a wide range of applications, from intricate jewellery to large-scale furniture pieces.

There are many different types of wood that can be cut and engraved using a laser, each with its own unique characteristics. Some of the most commonly used woods in laser cutting include:

  • Plywood: A popular choice for laser cutting due to its affordability and availability in a variety of thicknesses. It can also be easily engraved, allowing for intricate designs.
  • MDF: Medium-density fibreboard (MDF) is a versatile wood that is ideal for both cutting and engraving. Its smooth surface allows for precise engraving and it can be cut into intricate shapes without splintering. Veneered MDF
  • Softwoods and Hardwoods: Softwoods, such as pine and cedar, are easier to cut and engrave compared to hardwoods like oak or mahogany. Hardwoods, however, offer a more polished finish, as the engraving appears to be more contrasting compared to softwoods. Both are commonly used in furniture making, signage production and architectural models.

Plastics, including acrylic

Some customers may prefer plastic products as they are more lightweight and durable than some materials. Acrylic is the most commonly used plastic for laser cutting and engraving since its properties make it ideal for this process.

Paper and cardboard

Even tissue paper can be laser-cut and engraved, which shows how delicate a laser machine can be. Paper and cardboard are also among the most affordable materials for cutting and engraving. They are commonly used in packaging, invitations, business cards, and other paper crafts. Wedding invitations, for example,  can have intricate designs and details engraved on them, making it more special for the couple. Cardboard can also be used to create 3D models and large-scale sculptures.

Glass

Glass is a pretty popular material used for engraving and etching. We often cater to customers who want personalised glass products, such as wine glasses and tumblers, with their names or initials engraved on them. It’s also a perfect gift for anniversaries, weddings, and other special occasions.

Textiles

Our expertise in laser cutting and engraving also extends to textiles. Fabrics such as cotton, silk, polyster and fleece can be easily laser engraved with intricate patterns or logos. This is particularly useful for creating customised apparel, accessories, home decor and even theatrical costumes. Laser cutting is also a great alternative to traditional methods of fabric cutting, as it allows for more precise and intricate designs. Also typically the cut edge prevents fraying as the edges are fused.

Leather

Leather offers a luxurious finish to products and can be easily engraved with laser machines. It’s commonly used in the fashion industry for creating customised bags, wallets, belts and shoes. Even flask holders and journals can be engraved on leather, perfect for personal or corporate gifts. We can cut it also, just from the base material rather than cutting objects like pre-made items.
